How Long Does a Teeth Cleaning Take?

Wondering how much time to set aside for a dental cleaning? The short answer: most professional cleanings take 30 to 60 minutes. Here’s what happens during that time — and what can move the number up or down.

What is a professional teeth cleaning?

Teeth cleaning (dental prophylaxis) removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from your teeth. Plaque is the sticky bacterial film that builds up daily; tartar is hardened plaque that only a dental professional can remove. Regular cleanings are one of the best defenses against cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.

What affects how long it takes?

  • Your oral health. Good daily hygiene means less buildup and a quicker visit. Heavy plaque, tartar, or gum disease takes longer to address.
  • The type of cleaning. A standard cleaning is faster than a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), which treats more advanced gum issues below the gum line.
  • Your comfort. Sensitivity or dental anxiety may call for a gentler pace — and that’s perfectly fine with us.

What happens during the appointment

  1. Initial exam — your dentist or hygienist checks your teeth and gums for signs of cavities or gum disease.
  2. Plaque and tartar removal — a scaler clears buildup from tooth surfaces and along the gum line.
  3. Polishing — a high-powered brush and polishing paste remove remaining plaque and surface stains.
  4. Flossing and rinse — a final floss and rinse clears out any leftover debris.
  5. Fluoride treatment (optional) — a quick gel or foam application that strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities.

The American Dental Association recommends routine cleanings and checkups — for most people, every six months.
